'Gender in an Age of Global Care Crises' Conference 2024

We are delighted to report a successful conclusion to the Hub’s 2024 research conference! Titled “Gender in an Age of Global Care Crises,” this hybrid event convened individuals from across the globe for 20 presentations on relevant global care crises.

Day 1 emphasised the wide-ranging scope of “care issues” and the impact of contemporary challenges– such as climate change and technological innovation– on these problems. Highlights included keynote speeches from Professor Rhacel Salazar Parreñas (Princeton University) and Professor Sharmila Rudrappa (University of Texas at Austin) whose respective lectures yielded insights about migrant domestic workers’ rights and the relationship between catastrophe and caring practices. The day’s panel discussions also stood out, with presenters covering topics like “The Concept and Value of Care,” “Motherhood and Family Care Practices in East Asia,” and “Time, Work, and Women’s Caregiving.” Day 2’s schedule proved similarly eye-opening. Following morning presentations on “Masculinity and Care,” the final panel discussion highlighted migration-related care crises in several country contexts.

Points raised throughout the conference sparked fascinating exchanges between attendees. Discussions initiated during brief coffee and tea breaks led to rich insights swapped over lunches and Thursday night’s group dinner. The diverse range of participants’ research disciplines, interests, and regions made these conversations especially memorable.
