On Wednesday lunchtime, 10th May, Dr Leonie Tanczer gave a most interesting talk about her research on ‘technology-facilitated abuse in the context of intimate partner violence', that was convened by hub member, Dr Katya Hertog. Leonie highlighted how so much of the abuse within relationships involves very ordinary technologies intended to help with daily life that abusers repurpose for control purposes. Leonie also discussed the complex issue of how to define ‘tech abuse’. A lively Q&A conversation covered questions about the translation of the concept of ‘tech abuse’ into different languages. A further topic to arise was that of cross-border abuse, such as when dating scammers or blackmailers in one country target individuals in another country, suggesting a need to develop global definitions of tech abuse and transnational regulatory frameworks.
